Everybody loves new music, right?  Mike from Cincinnati band The Pinstripes calls in to the show to talk to Courtney about their brand new record The Pinstripes /I.  The two discuss the benefits of Kickstarter, why this album may not be their debut record, but sounds like a completely different band, and how to get lost in the rabbit-hole of Jamaican music. The Flyover Ska Show: Episode 33 – The Beatdown

Hola (or should I say Bienvenue?) to the newest season of the Flyover Ska Show!  We kicked it off right with a big party at the Triple Rock in Minneapolis with French-Canadian reggae stars The Beatdown.  The Montreal band is currently on a North American tour marking their first time in the North Star State.  After their amazing set, the band relaxed over at Courtney’s house and told him all about the origins of the group, their love for “reggae with an edge,” and why it’s okay to rag on Milwaukee.  Polish off a plate of poutine while you enjoy the latest episode!

MNSKA will be at Asian Man Records 15 Year Anniversary

Hey everybody!  It’s Courtney from MNSKA.com informing you all that I will be out in San Francisco this week for the Asian Man Records 15 Year Anniversary.  Owner Mike Park has put together 10 shows in 5 days featuring old and new bands from the Asian Man Records roster.  Some of the very first (and best) ska and punk I ever listened to will be reuniting and playing, including Slapstick, MU330, The Chinkees, Slow Gherkin, Buck-O-Nine, The Queers, Classics Of Love, and The Lawrence Arms.  My goal is to blog from San Fran, giving you all some video and first-hand accounts from the week-long fest.

I will also be trying to score interviews with bands and fans from the shows for The Flyover Ska Show podcast.  So please stay tuned to MNSKA.com for more details!

Wow, that year went by quickly!  A brief glance at the calendar has shown that this show has been going for a full year, and for our 30th episode Courtney had the privilege to talk with DIY mastermind Jeff Rosenstock.  Jeff is currently on a solo tour for his band Bomb The Music Industry! and spent some time bopping around the Twin Cities on a Wednesday night after his show in St. Paul.  Along the way, Jeff tells Courtney of his humble beginnings, why the Triple Rock in Minneapolis makes the best poboys, and the bittersweet realization of growing up means becoming a sports fan.

The Flyover Ska Show: Episode 29 – The Toasters 30th Anniversary Tour

Time flies when you are playing ska!  It’s been a busy couple months for our fearless host, so Courtney takes some time get us all up to speed on his whereabouts before presenting his interview.  The esteemed guest is a veteran to this show and to the American Ska scene, the one and only Bucket from the NYC band The Toasters.  The band is finishing the first leg of their 30th Anniversary tour, so Buck fills us in on what he’s been up to these past 3 decades.  He chats with Courtney over a pint of Surly some of the history of producing ska music, gives some tips to the up-and-coming bands, and describes the honor of having a beer named after his beloved band.  Indeed, no better pairing in the world than ska music and beer!

Friend of MNSKA and DJ of the weekly radio show Ska’s The Limit (KDHX 88.1 FM, St. Louis, MO) JJ Loy has added some music from MNSKA bands The Prizefighters and The Dropsteppers to his playlist.  Loy played “Follow My Sound” by The Prizefighters and “Bring It On Home To You” by The Dropsteppers on the program last Saturday night.  He even gave a shout out to the Flyover Ska Show podcast.
