MN Zoo Concert Series To Feature Lots Of Ska And Reggae

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

The weather is warming up here in Minnesota meaning that Summer is right around the corner.  It also means that the Music In The Zoo summer concert series put on by our friends at Sue McLean & Associates and Subway is ready to kick off.  This concert series takes place at the Minnesota Zoo Ampitheater in Apple Valley, MN from June 6th to August 20th and features numerous national bands from various musical styles and genres (including a Hanson reunion!)

There are typically a ska band or two thrown in the mix, but this Summer there seems to be a bunch of different ska and reggae groups playing:

Friday, June 25th — The Wailers, The Aggrolites
Wednesday, June 30th — Buckwheat Zydeco, Cherry Poppin’ Daddies
Thursday, July 22nd — Squeeze, The English Beat
Saturday, August 7th — Jimmy Cliff

Tickets for these shows and any other Music In The Zoo concerts can be purchased HERE.  Stay tuned to MNSKA for chances to win tickets to these one-of-a-kind shows!

Los Angeles band The Bullets describe themselves as L.A. Oldies meets reggae.  They are starting to get a bit of buzz around the southern California music scene.  Roger Rivas (organist for The Aggrolites) is one of the founding members of this band.  In this promo video, you hear from the guys themselves what sets them apart in the L.A. scene.  I look forward to hearing more from these guys in the future.

Thanks to Musical Occupation for the video link!

Photos from Aggrolites, Void Union, and Prizefighters show!

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Pictures have now been posted from the Aggrolites, Void Union and Prizefighters show from June 14, 2009.  The show was a phenomonal success and more of giant party than a concert.  The Varsity Theater in Dinkytown (Minneapolis, MN) hosted the shindig and it was great to see so many people groovin’ and dancin’ to the reggae and rocksteady music.  A DJ spun reggae and soul records in between sets so that the party was never dulled.  This party was a great way to kick off the Twin Cities summer season.

Big thanks to Degross Punk Photography for shooting these great pictures!  Check them out HERE.  You can see more after the jump.
