JJ Loy Presents: The Slackers “Redlight Redid”

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

Friend of MNSKA and overall ska luminary JJ Loy (Ska Blah Blah, Ska’s The Limit) has been very busy lately.  By digging into his collection of concert bootlegs of The Slackers, he decided to put together a special compilation album.  With the band’s blessing, he has put together a recreation of their classic album Redlight using live bootleg recordings from a multitude of different shows.  The compilation is titled Redlight Redid and is put on in part with Musical Occupation.

Head over to the Musical Occupation blog site to listen and download this creative rendition of one the Slackers’ best albums.

Video: Operation Ivy (Live in St Louis ’88)

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Friend of MNSka and the brains behind St. Louis, MO radio show Ska’s The Limit, JJ Loy, pointed me to a series of youtube videos.  The date was April 25, 1988.  The place was St. Louis.  The band?  Operation Ivy.  The videos show the entire set in remarkable clarity.  It’s easy to see why this band was heralded as such a groundbreaking and trailblazing tour de force based on this fiery live performance.

Check out the rest of the videos after the jump.

MNSka highlighted on Ska Blah Blah

Friday, April 17th, 2009

As a part of their Blog Highlight section, prolific ska blog Ska Blah Blah has given our humble little site a shoutout.  Big thanks to JJ of Ska Blah Blah and St. Louis’s Ska’s The Limit radio show!  Nothing like a little midwestern unity amongst fans of ska and reggae.  No word on whether Ska Blah Blah has a law blog, or will lob a law bomb.
