For years, the Twin Cities have lacked a regular ska/reggae DJ night, much to the dismay of all of us who all-too-rarely get a chance to go out and dance to vintage Jamaican 45′s booming for hours on end. Seeking to end this dry spell, Aaron Porter (of The Prizefighters/MN Ska) is officially launching the Prizefighter Sound System this September at Grumpy’s Downtown.

See the flier for all the key details, and you can find out more after the jump.

Initially, this is only a 2-week limited engagement, but the goal is to secure a monthly event if things go well. The first night is Thursday, September 16th, and then you can get another chance the week after; Thursday, Septermber 23rd. The first record starts spinning at 10PM, and there’s no cover. You’ll need ID, since Grumpy’s is a bar, so unfortunately this is not an all-ages event at this time.

The Prizefighter Sound System brings you strictly the best in classic Jamaican tunes and rare soul gems. You’ll hear ska, reggae, rocksteady, Northern Soul, and maybe one or two extra treats thrown in for good measure. Remember, it’s for 2 nights only, so put on your dancing shoes and come down to Grumpy’s. We’ll all make our case for establishing a monthly ska and reggae DJ dance night in the Twin Cities!

Last Friday, the worldwide ska community said goodbye to one of its legends. Alton Ellis, age 70, died of cancer in London. Long heralded as the “Godfather of Rocksteady,” Ellis jumped onto the Jamaican music scene with his 1967 album Mr. Soul of Jamaica, long considered the definitive album of the rocksteady genre. He also crafted the song “Get Ready – Rock Steady” which was responsible for the genre’s namesake. In the early 70′s, Ellis moved to the UK and brought with him his landmark sound. Even later in life, Ellis continued to put out music and was very active in reggae music. MNSka will miss him and our wishes go out to his loved ones.
