Citypages slams The Toasters, ska

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Free publication from the Twin Cities metro area, Citypages, wrote a venomous editorial regarding the Toasters show at the Triple Rock last Thursday, October 22nd.  The column opens with some biting comparisons:

Columbus brought smallpox to the New World. Enola Gay brought the A-bomb to Hiroshima. And The Toasters brought third wave ska to the United States.

Calling American ska music “one of the great musical disasters of the 20th century,” David Hansen goes on to describe it as a mere fashion trend and painted ska-influenced bands like the Mighty Mighty Bosstones as unforgiveable.

It is clear that Hansen doesn’t really know much about ska music’s past or present based on the unnecessary smearing that takes place in his article.  What is unclear is how this got past his editor and why he wrote it in the first place.  Citypages is a publication that promotes local shows, but this article seems to be an attempt to dissuade music lovers from attending the show.  Not only that, there were 3 local MNSka bands on the bill who had the privilege of playing with one of their musical idols and influences.  If the goal at Citypages is to promote local shows, they missed the mark.

In The Studio: The Mighty Mighty Bosstones–Update

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

As previously reported, Boston Ska-Core pioneers The Mighty Mighty Bosstones are all set to begin recording a brand new album.  According to their new Twitter page, the Bosstones have finished the pre-production process, have trimmed the song list from 25 to 16 songs, and will begin recording within the next day or two.   On July 1st, bassist Joe Gittleman posted a picture on his Photobucket account of the master song list for the new album:

Exciting stuff, huh?  Sounds like there’s going to be lots of good stuff to look forward to on this album.  Interestingly, it appears the Bosstones’ reworking of “Impossible Dream” will not be included on the album, nor will the new song “Impossible Dream” that the band debuted on election night last November.

In The Studio: Mighty Mighty Bosstones recording new album!

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

It appears that legendary ska-core band the Mighty Mighty Bosstones are recording a new album.  They posted the following blog entry on their myspace today:

“Lately we have been busy writing and recording music for a new MMB record. Two of the songs, “Impossible Dream” and “next To Nothing” will be released next month on a limited edition 7″ on our own Big Rig Records (500 on black, 500 on white). We added these two songs to the player TONIGHT in order to commemorate and celebrate this historic election. Enjoy!”

The last album the Bosstones  realeased was 2002′s A Jackknife To A Swan on independent label Side One Dummy Records, just before they went on hiatus.  It appears the new album is set for release sometime next year.  More details to come!
