The Flyover Ska Show: Episode 28 – The Hard Times

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

You can never sing out of tune if you don’t have a singer!  Which brings me to our guests this week Bob Timm and Jacob WakeUp! from instrumental NYC reggae/roots/soul band The Hard Times.  They tell Courtney the story about how the band was formed out of ska and reggae musicians from New York, Connecticut, and Florida.  Living up to their name, a down economy has prevented the group from touring outside the five boroughs but thanks to veteran bands like The Slackers and The Toasters, the band is able to take advantage of playing in a rich musical community.  Make sure to check out their hot new EP Two Bucks For Bob (which is oddly available for 3 bucks).

If you’re in the Minneapolis area, be sure to check out our first live event at The Red Sea, featuring performances by Green Room Rockers, The Pinstripes, The Dropsteppers and Secondhand Ska Kings.  Head to mnska.com for more information.

The Flyover Ska Show: Episode 26 – Anthony Abbinanti (The Drastics)

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

As Mother Nature blows a nightmarish blizzard across the Midwest, we at the Flyover Ska Show recommend putting on wool socks, throw another log on the fire, and curl up with our latest episode.  This week, Anthony Abbinanti of Chicago bands The Drastics and Deal’s Gone Bad calls in to give us an update on his latest reggae-dub creations.  Anthony also shares stories of how The Drastics first gathered, his theories on the recent resurgence of instrumental music, and the apparent voodoo-gypsy like curse he and his bandmates seem to be under.  There is a lot of great music to look forward to in the coming year, courtesy of Anthony and The Drastics.

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

It’s not everyday you get talk with royalty!  This week’s guest King Django calls in from the Stubborn Records office in New Jersey for part one of the two-part interview with Courtney.  The two discuss the early beginnings of Django’s past, the origins behind his name and how Rocker-T is to blame for its longevity, and a personal PSA about the real consequences of Sex, Drugs, Ska and Reggae.  King Django also shares his theory about music based on values and the turmoil of independent ska labels around the turn of the century.  So listen in and stay tuned for the epic conclusion of the King Django interview coming soon.

The Flyover Ska Show: Episode 24 – The Prizefighters

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

Party time! Excellent!  Prior to the first big MNSKA house party, local reggae-rocksteady band The Prizefighters sat down to chat about their brand new debut full-length Follow My Sound.  The band also debates whether or not Less Than Jake is a gateway drug, how King Django’s ability to lose footwear is second only to his audio mastering skills, and their Subway-style pricing for their upcoming CD release show at the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis, MN on Saturday, December 4th.  The band was also kind enough to preview some the tracks from their new record, so quit stalling and start listening!

The Flyover Ska Show: Episode 23 – Sammy Krajkowski (The Forthrights)

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

We’re back!  Not only has the show returned from a small break, but Sammy Krajkowski from The Forthrights has also returned to talk about the upcoming releases and tours of his band.  Courtney also discusses the differences in cost of living in the Midwest compared to New York with regards to cheapest booze, the pros and cons of going vegan, and why items you can double-fist are definitely better than those you cannot.  Sammy brings us up to speed on what the past year has been like for The Forthrights by sharing stories about their tour with Chris Murray and Vic Ruggiero, recording the tracks for the upcoming full-length and 7″s, and the band’s first legitimate “rockstar moment.”  This interview is for those who love Bruce Springsteen and all things Jersey (except the Jersey Shore…that’s a tale for another day).

Be on the lookout for The Forthrights on the Ska Is Dead 7″ of the Month release and a 4 song 7″ this year and 2 U.S. tours to support their upcoming full-length in 2011.

The Flyover Ska Show: Episode 22 – Maddie Ruthless

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

After many weeks of predominantly male musical guests, we score one for the girls as Courtney interviews the Rocksteady Queen of New Orleans, Maddie Ruthless.  Maddie has made a name for herself in the world of ska by becoming an integral part of the music scene.  Starting at the age of 13, she started her own zine, spins rocksteady and reggae music during the week, and just released a brand new album Hold The Phone with her red-hot band Maddie Ruthless and the Secret Affair.  Before taking off on her UK tour, Maddie calls in to the show to talk a little NFL football, the importance of securing a Lil’ Wayne endorsement, and the strength of the American ska scene.

The Flyover Ska Show – Episode 20 The Dropsteppers

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

Juggling.  It’s a skill that most don’t possess.  But this week’s guests, Minneapolis rocksteady band The Dropsteppers, seem to be proficient in the art of juggling schedules.  Courtney drops by their Nordeast Minneapolis rehearsal space to discuss how six musicians with lives, dayjobs, and long commutes can function in five different musical projects at the same time.  Is it magic?  Did they sell their souls to Beelzebub in exchange for superior organizational skills and an ear for early reggae?  The only way to find out is listen.  As a bonus, the band showcased their musical talents by doing a live performance that you can hear exclusively on this episode of The Flyover Ska Show.
