Single Review by MNSKA contributor Adam Vermillion
We received an e-mail the other day here at the MNSKA offices from some lads across the Pond going by the moniker of Counting Coins. They asked us to review their new single “Blue on Blue,” due out for public consumption on 07/01/2013 (or for our friends in the UK, 01/07/2013).
You’ll definitely want to check these guys out. Their single is catchy, political, and filled with raucous energy.
We have a loaded ska show coming up Tuesday night at The Red Sea in Minneapolis. You won’t want to miss this one! Coming all the way from Waikiki, Hawaii, PIMPBOT (ex-Go Jimmy Go) will be performing their brand of ska tunes (see above video) as well as Ska Skank Redemption from Fargo, North Dakota. Plenty of local flare to be had as well with MNSKA bands The Dropsteppers and The Thundertones. Special guests Shitpony (members of 3 Minute Hero). The 18+ show is only $7 and starts at 7pm.

MNSKA band The Prizefighters have unveiled their new music video for their haunting reggae instrumental “Sukeban.” The song is on the upcoming 7-inch vinyl series A Musical Knockout In 3 Rounds! which will be released in June.
MNSKA band The Prizefighters made an announcement this week that they will be releasing a 7-inch vinyl series called A Musical Knockout In 3 Rounds! In preparation for the series, they have started a pre-order campaign on IndieGoGo, allowing fans to not only get all the 45rpm records before they are released, but other items like mp3s, an exclusive live DVD of their performance with Roy & Yvonne at Chicago’s Jamaican Oldies Weekend, signed test pressings, a brand-new T-shirt designed by CHema Skandal! and MORE. With the different reward levels, you can support the band even if you don’t have a turntable.
As you can see from the ad above, the band has a boxing match theme for the series where each record is a fight round, pitting each side against the other and representing a different 60s Jamaican music genre; Round 1 is ska, Round 2 is rocksteady, and Round 3 is reggae. Each “round” also contains unique label art designed by the band that aims for a distinct 60s Jamaican aesthetic. The ad gives a preview of each song in the series, all original and previously unreleased songs from the band.
The Prizefighters have set a goal of $3,000, but after only a couple of days of the pre-order they are nearly halfway!

MNSKA band The Dropsteppers are a part of the latest series of Ska Is Dead 7-inches, recording their song “Darker Side Of Grey” on a split with Boston band The Void Union. Come check out the band live to pick up a copy, but enjoy this video as Tom puts the vinyl on the turntable for a listen!
As some of you have noticed, Tim Armstrong (Rancid, Transplants, Op Ivy) has been releasing a number of songs under the name Tim Timebomb and Friends. The songs range from old 2 Tone ska, bluegrass, country, and zydeco covers to old Rancid tunes to complete originals, like this bouncy ska tune called “Family.” So far, Tim has released a song a day for the past couple months. At some point, he plans to release an album of these songs, but for now you can enjoy them on YouTube.
