The Flyover Ska Show: Episode 24 – The Prizefighters

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

Party time! Excellent!  Prior to the first big MNSKA house party, local reggae-rocksteady band The Prizefighters sat down to chat about their brand new debut full-length Follow My Sound.  The band also debates whether or not Less Than Jake is a gateway drug, how King Django’s ability to lose footwear is second only to his audio mastering skills, and their Subway-style pricing for their upcoming CD release show at the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis, MN on Saturday, December 4th.  The band was also kind enough to preview some the tracks from their new record, so quit stalling and start listening!

Flyover Ska Show is featured in Twin Cities Metro Magazine

Monday, November 8th, 2010

This past weekend, Fancy Pants Gangsters, the netcast network that has brought you great ska podcasts like Midwest Ska Moment and the Flyover Ska Show, was featured in Twin Cities Metro Magazine.  The article, entitled “Meet The Gangsters Of Internet Broadcasting” had this to say about MNSKA.com admin Courtney Klos and his podcast:

The group’s downloadable shows, or netcasts (it’s not technically a not a “podcast” unless you’re using an iPod), include “The Well-Fed Guide to Life,” in which Pedersen and Dave Bergen host a talk show from a different restaurant every week, (in a recent show they reminisced about shopping at IKEA while eating hot dogs and seeing the movie Saw while eating “pig parts”);  “Yet Another Gaming Show,” where Pederson joins Mike Deneen, Courtney Klos and Ashley Hay to discuss gaming news (like Playstation phone releases and facial recognition in video games) and “Flyover Ska Show,” where Klos interviews artists, bloggers and DJs involved in the ska revolution — and more. The Fancy Pants Gangsters cover a wide spectrum of pop-culture topics, and they’re still evolving.

The Flyover Ska Show: Episode 23 – Sammy Krajkowski (The Forthrights)

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

We’re back!  Not only has the show returned from a small break, but Sammy Krajkowski from The Forthrights has also returned to talk about the upcoming releases and tours of his band.  Courtney also discusses the differences in cost of living in the Midwest compared to New York with regards to cheapest booze, the pros and cons of going vegan, and why items you can double-fist are definitely better than those you cannot.  Sammy brings us up to speed on what the past year has been like for The Forthrights by sharing stories about their tour with Chris Murray and Vic Ruggiero, recording the tracks for the upcoming full-length and 7″s, and the band’s first legitimate “rockstar moment.”  This interview is for those who love Bruce Springsteen and all things Jersey (except the Jersey Shore…that’s a tale for another day).

Be on the lookout for The Forthrights on the Ska Is Dead 7″ of the Month release and a 4 song 7″ this year and 2 U.S. tours to support their upcoming full-length in 2011.

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

After many weeks of predominantly male musical guests, we score one for the girls as Courtney interviews the Rocksteady Queen of New Orleans, Maddie Ruthless.  Maddie has made a name for herself in the world of ska by becoming an integral part of the music scene.  Starting at the age of 13, she started her own zine, spins rocksteady and reggae music during the week, and just released a brand new album Hold The Phone with her red-hot band Maddie Ruthless and the Secret Affair.  Before taking off on her UK tour, Maddie calls in to the show to talk a little NFL football, the importance of securing a Lil’ Wayne endorsement, and the strength of the American ska scene.

The Flyover Ska Show – Episode 20 The Dropsteppers

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

Juggling.  It’s a skill that most don’t possess.  But this week’s guests, Minneapolis rocksteady band The Dropsteppers, seem to be proficient in the art of juggling schedules.  Courtney drops by their Nordeast Minneapolis rehearsal space to discuss how six musicians with lives, dayjobs, and long commutes can function in five different musical projects at the same time.  Is it magic?  Did they sell their souls to Beelzebub in exchange for superior organizational skills and an ear for early reggae?  The only way to find out is listen.  As a bonus, the band showcased their musical talents by doing a live performance that you can hear exclusively on this episode of The Flyover Ska Show.

The Flyover Ska Show: Episode 19 – Chester Bay

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

No matter how closely you pay attention to a music scene, there are always a handful of bands that fly under your radar.  This week’s guests, Chester Bay, falls right into that category as Courtney had to find out about this band via text message from an inebriated friend.  The reggae-blues band took some time out before their sound check at O’Gara’s Garage in St. Paul, MN to sit in the patented Midwestern humidity to discuss their musical influences, randomly burst into song, and to promote their new album Get Free which was released this past Spring.

The Flyover Ska Show: Episode 18 – Aaron Porter (MNSKA)

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

Let’s face it; some people are long on complaints and short on motivation while others have the drive and desire to get things done.  Aaron Porter, co-founder of MNSKA.com, fits nicely into the latter category.  Aaron heads over to Courtney’s house and chats about a former ska scene in limbo and his actions to create a website and community for music fans to rally around.   It’s a great conversation for those who are interested in fostering a local music scene.  The guys also talk about the countless number of bands and musical projects he’s been a part of as well as the brand new website for his rocksteady band The Prizefighters.
