Everybody loves new music, right?  Mike from Cincinnati band The Pinstripes calls in to the show to talk to Courtney about their brand new record The Pinstripes /I.  The two discuss the benefits of Kickstarter, why this album may not be their debut record, but sounds like a completely different band, and how to get lost in the rabbit-hole of Jamaican music. Check out the brand new album, which drops on February 3rd on their website. And if you’re in the Twin Cities area, check out The Pinstripes at The Red Sea in Minneapolis on Saturday, March 3rd with special guests The Prizefighters, Dred I Dread, and Umbrella Bed!

Podcast: Overproof Radio Now Streaming on MNSKA!

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

Overproof Radio is now on the air at MNSKA.com! Starting with this, our 10th episode, you’ll be able to find this biweekly podcast of Jamaican-inspired music right here, as well as at overproof.podomatic.com. Listen to the stream below, and read on for track listings and more about the show.

I’m Matt, host of the Overproof Radio podcast, and I’m thrilled to be the newest member of the MNSKA.com team. I played in my first ska-punk band in about 1996 — and first bookmarked MNSKA.com when it was a list of band names on, like, a Geocities page — and while I have pretty much retired the trumpet, I’ve been in love with Jamaican music ever since. You’ll find that love reflected in each Overproof Radio episode; I try to capture anything and everything that catches my ear — reggae, rocksteady, dub, traditional ska, roots, dancehall, ska-punk and more are all fair game. I’d love to get your feedback on this or any episode, so make sure and keep an ear on Overproof Radio via Facebook and Twitter, or just drop me an email!

Bosstones’ Dicky Barrett on The Adam Carolla Show to promote ‘The Magic Of Youth’

Monday, December 12th, 2011

Boston ska-core vets The Mighty Mighty Bosstones released their latest full-length album The Magic Of Youth last week.  To promote the album, longtime friend and Bosstones fan Adam Carolla invited lead singer Dicky Barrett as a guest on his wildly successful podcast The Adam Carolla Show.  The two discuss the new album and share a funny story about a delayed text message.  If you are not a fan of Carolla’s rants and nasally drone, it may be hard to sit through, but I definitely recommend checking out this episode if you are a fan of Dicky and the Bosstones.

The Flyover Ska Show: Episode 33 – The Beatdown

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

Hola (or should I say Bienvenue?) to the newest season of the Flyover Ska Show!  We kicked it off right with a big party at the Triple Rock in Minneapolis with French-Canadian reggae stars The Beatdown.  The Montreal band is currently on a North American tour marking their first time in the North Star State.  After their amazing set, the band relaxed over at Courtney’s house and told him all about the origins of the group, their love for “reggae with an edge,” and why it’s okay to rag on Milwaukee.  Polish off a plate of poutine while you enjoy the latest episode!

Whether you are an old fan welcoming our return or a new listener just discovering us, you can enjoy that new page smell of our Google+ Page. Mmm, socially.
