Jamaican Rocksteady is a genre of music that only held prominence for a couple of years back in the late 60′s. So why do we find it so fascinating and rewarding? To get to the bottom of this riddle, Courtney talks with none other than the “Rocksteady Queen of New Orleans,” Maddie Ruthless. Maddie also discusses her recent move to New York, the collaborations on her latest album Maddie Ruthless featuring The Forthrights and Friends, and what it is like playing in a new band. Sit back as Courtney and Maddie take you to Rocksteady School.

Something To Do is one of the nicest bands in all the Midwest. So nice, in fact, that they agreed to perform a do-over interview when host Courtney fails to hit the record button! Kenny, guitarist of S2D, had a few spare minutes prior to their CD release show to call in to the podcast and talk all about the new album Music For Fine Dining. The band has made some changes to the line-up since the last time Kenny was on the show and talks to Courtney about some big time shows the band has played recently.

After 6 months of hiatus from podcasting, Courtney makes a triumphant return to the Flyover Ska Show. While he is lining up guests for upcoming episodes, we will bring you an interview he conducted with maker of the upcoming film Legends Of SkaBrad Klein (aka General Moses). Brad takes us on the journey of his life in music, which includes creating reggae-inspired workout tapes, immersing himself in Jamaican music as a radio DJ, and throwing the quintessential concert that reunited all of the forefathers of ska music. Amongst the interesting anecdotes and life lessons, Brad describes the struggles and realities of making a music documentary. I’ll give you a hint: it costs a lot of money to make a movie!
Big ups to King Django for creating our new theme song!

Hola (or should I say Bienvenue?) to the newest season of the Flyover Ska Show! We kicked it off right with a big party at the Triple Rock in Minneapolis with French-Canadian reggae stars The Beatdown. The Montreal band is currently on a North American tour marking their first time in the North Star State. After their amazing set, the band relaxed over at Courtney’s house and told him all about the origins of the group, their love for “reggae with an edge,” and why it’s okay to rag on Milwaukee. Polish off a plate of poutine while you enjoy the latest episode!

Hey ska fans! I wanted to take the time to remind you that our friend Brad Klein (aka General Moses) is still hard at work on the upcoming Legends Of Ska documentary. His Kickstarter campaign is coming down the homestretch with only 16 days left, he is a little over $1,000 dollars short of his $15,000 goal. We at MNSKA feel that this is a very important film and a piece of history, so we encourage you to please contribute HERE.
Back in 2000, General Moses was the host of Rude Radio (Radio K, KUOM 770AM/100.7FM/104.5FM, Minneapolis, MN) and he conducted a phone interview with ska legend Derrick Morgan. Check out his 4-part interview HERE.
Holy exclusives, Batman! Along the way, the guys discuss the appeal of female fronted bands, why Minnesotans should be proud of Prince, and what it’s like to introduce ska music to the Chinese.
All you Twin Cities folk should make sure to head over to Bunker’s Music Bar and Grill in Minneapolis on Friday, June 17th to catch Jay and the rest of 3 Minute Hero!
