Citypages slams The Toasters, ska

Free publication from the Twin Cities metro area, Citypages, wrote a venomous editorial regarding the Toasters show at the Triple Rock last Thursday, October 22nd.  The column opens with some biting comparisons:

Columbus brought smallpox to the New World. Enola Gay brought the A-bomb to Hiroshima. And The Toasters brought third wave ska to the United States.

Calling American ska music “one of the great musical disasters of the 20th century,” David Hansen goes on to describe it as a mere fashion trend and painted ska-influenced bands like the Mighty Mighty Bosstones as unforgiveable.

It is clear that Hansen doesn’t really know much about ska music’s past or present based on the unnecessary smearing that takes place in his article.  What is unclear is how this got past his editor and why he wrote it in the first place.  Citypages is a publication that promotes local shows, but this article seems to be an attempt to dissuade music lovers from attending the show.  Not only that, there were 3 local MNSka bands on the bill who had the privilege of playing with one of their musical idols and influences.  If the goal at Citypages is to promote local shows, they missed the mark.
